I attempt to raise my voice like a son we couldn't keep.
The palm trees that wave goodbye were never very welcoming.
I miss the mouths that called me brother.
I miss so many little things.
I miss the exit on the left and dab both eyelids with my sleeves.
My mind wanders past some children who were close enough to kiss. They went to prom nipping at their parents bitters
and wrapped their car around a bridge.
Two lay next to their grandfathers,
another never walked again.
Another still serves a sentence that his father can't forgive.

There in the teeth of every trouble is a swear without a jar
biting hands and feeding habits, cursing who you know you aren't
(until you don't know who you are).
There in gold of every struggle is the soul:
the collision of two stars.
Lay my head down in California.
Race my mind into the dark using the light of passing cars
until you don't know who you are.

If we're all just bred for harvest,
if we're to ever ward off death
it better be as starving artists,
it better be through drugs and sex,
it better be through my one true love.
You better never let me go,
but if you can't do me the honor,
you better never tell me so.
